SunPlicity Program

Our SunPlicity Program -  Skin Cancer Prevention through Sports and Active Play

Current estimates are that 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Nearly 9,500 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer every day! Help NYDG Foundation deliver its sun prevention program through sport and active play to children and youth across the USA.

The American Chamber of Dermatology estimates that nearly 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Getting only 1 blistered sunburn during childhood or adolescence can nearly double your chance of developing melanoma. The Academy clearly states that experiencing 5 or more of these heavy-duty and painful sunburns between the ages of 15 and 20 will increase the melanoma skin cancer risk by 80& and nonmelanoma risk, like basal cell skin cancer by 68%. The sad reality is that 1 American will die from melanoma every hour. That's correct: 1 every hour! In 2017, it is estimated that 9,730 American deaths will be attributed to melanoma.

The NYDG Foundation recognizes that the United States needs to do more to effectively and creatively deliver public skin health projects, including providing shade and sunscreen in recreational environments where young athletes play, to raise awareness of the importance of sun protection and sunburn prevention to reduce the burden of skin cancer.

Our SunPlicity Program aims to help sport and active play coaches and trainers protect the physical health of young persons by promoting behaviours to prevent skin cancer and to build the development (physical, social, intellectual, emotional) of the whole person. SunPlicity is a physical literacy program using sport and active play to promote public health, social and environmental messages and to develop the intellectual, emotional, physical and social skills of children and youth.

SunPlicity focusses on:

Sun Safety: To educate children and youth about the necessary tools to protect their health from the sun and the dangers of the skin cancer.
Skin Health Education: (To) educate children and youth about the importance of healthy skin.
Parks and Playgrounds Resource Protection: (To) educate children and youth to respect, preserve and protect the natural resources (trees, water, wildlife) of parks and playgrounds.

We have created a SunPlicity Manual which is designed to guide the training and development of sport and active play coaches and trainers and on how to deliver SunPlicity.
