CURRENT ESTIMATES ARE THAT 1 IN 5 AMERICANS WILL DEVELOP SKIN CANCER IN THEIR LIFETIME. HELP US DELIVER OUR SHADE UP! USA SKIN CANCER PREVENTION PROGRAM THROUGH SPORTS AND ACTIVE PLAY TO THE MILLIONS OF ACTIVE KIDS ACROSS THE USA.
Did you know that getting just one blistered sunburn during childhood or adolescence can nearly double your chance of developing melanoma? The American Academy of Dermatology clearly states that experiencing 5 or more of these painful sunburns between the ages of 15 and 20 will increase the melanoma skin cancer risk by 80% and the nonmelanoma risk (basal cell skin cancer) by 68%. The sad reality is that 1 American will die from melanoma every hour. That’s correct: 1 every hour! In 2017, it was estimated that 9,730 American deaths were attributed to melanoma- 15,000 from squamous cell carcinoma- and 3,000 from basal cell carcinoma.
The NYDG Foundation recognizes that the United States needs to do more to effectively and creatively deliver public skin health projects to raise awareness of the importance of sun protection and sunburn prevention to reduce the burden of skin cancer. Our SHADE UP! USA program aims to help coaches and trainers across the U.S. protect the physical health of the more than 25 million active outdoor kids by
promoting behaviors to prevent skin cancer.
SHADE UP! is also a physical literacy program using sport and active play to promote social and environmental messages and to develop the intellectual, emotional, physical and social skills of the whole person.
SHADE UP! USA GOALS:
Sun Safety: To educate children and youth about the necessary tools to protect their health from the sun and the dangers of the skin cancer.
